...I Am...

16 When evening came, his disciples went down to the sea, 17 got into a boat, and started across the sea to Capernaum. It was now dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them. 18 The sea became rough because a strong wind was blowing. 19 When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they were terrified. 20 But he said to them, “It is I; do not be afraid.” 21 Then they wanted to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached the land toward which they were goin” John 6:16-21.

Centuries earlier God revealed Himself to Moses with the decisive statement, “I AM” Exodus 3:14. Throughout the Old Testament, others added to His name “I AM” – translated Yahweh or Jehovah or LORD – by giving Him names that clarified His character, based upon His provision and His miracles. In the Scriptures God’s names appeared as Jehovah-Jireh (the Lord, My Provider), Jehovah Rapha (the Lord Heals), Jehovah Nissi (the Lord, My Banner), Jehovah Shalom, (the Lord, Our Peace), Jehovah Raah (the Lord, My Shepherd), and more.

I think verse 20 is the key verse here because it is one of the few I AM saying of Jesus: But Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid. I AM” John 6:20. This is so reminiscent of Exodus 3 (above) when God revealed the Divine name to Moses on Mount Sinai before the 1st Passover: “14 God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM” Exodus 3:14.

I wish I never forget that the Creator and Savior of the world has come to save us from the storms of life as He was doing for the disciples in the text above from John 6. Obviously Jesus does much more than just walk across water for us when the storms of life pull us off course from Jesus! I am referring of course to Good Friday and the death of Jesus on the Cross. Jesus stayed there until His beaten corpse is taken down and buried.

I also love verse 21 that speaks clearly of the willingness of the disciples to receive Jesus into their boat? “21 They wanted to take Him into the boat” John 6:21. That willingness for us all to take Jesus into our lives when we are sinking from the storms of a sinful life — that is the key message for each of us! When I go through difficult times in life am I willing to receive Jesus into my life, for only He can quench our thirst, calm our storms, and pull the winds down from the sky. Only Jesus can come and give us the peace that the world cannot understand. Only Jesus could this: “27 Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful” John 14:27.

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God, have mercy on me a sinner.

From the Bible:

“Jesus said to them, ‘I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst’” John 6:35.

“And He was saying to them, ‘You are from below, I am from above; you are of this world, I am not of this world’” John 8:23.

“Truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am” John 8:58.

“I am the Light of the world” John 9:5.
