I just read this recently while on vacation. It comes from John’s Gospel: “37 On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them” John 7:37-38. the Festival in Jerusalem was the Feast of Tabernacles, sometimes known as the feast of booths, or perhaps most commonly called Sukkot. This is pone of the feasts Jews must observe, and usually occurs in late September to mid-October. The feast begins five days after the Day of Atonement and at the time the fall harvest had just been completed. It is a time of joyous celebration as the Israelites celebrated God’s continued provision for them in the current harvest and remembered His provision and protection during the 40 years in the wilderness. At the time of Jesus Jerusalem was jammed with Jews, thousands upon thousands of people coming together to remember and celebrate God’s deliverance and His provision, all living in temporary shelters or booths as part of the requirements of the feast. During the eight-day period, so many sacrifices were made that it required all twenty-four divisions of priests to be present to assist in the sacrificial duties. The Jewish priesthood was divided into 24 divisions or courses or families, 16 were Zadokite and 8 were of Ithamar. Each group was responsible for one week of service in the Temple at a time, so in a given year they would serve a total of two weeks as well as the times of the festivals. The rest of the year they ministered throughout the land in the areas in which they lived.
Jesus was there and inside the temple He preached these words: “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them” John 7:37-38. If you don’t know God, just TRY to come to Him, Try Him! He will quench your thirsty curiosity or doubts about Him! Do this and He will lead you to believe in Him and His life will come into you as living streams, life as never before! You might ask, “How do you know this, Paul?” And my answer is to look at the text about. JESUS PROMISES that when you come to him, an action he inspires and enables all of us to do, he will allow “rivers of living water will flow from within you!”
All I have to say is this: WHAT A PROMISE OF GOD!
May we pray for one another today that we will all do this, that we will come to Him!
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God, have mercy on me a sinner.
From the Bible:
“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest”
Matthew 11:28.
“All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out” John 6:37.
“No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day” John 6:44.
“And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved” Joel 2:32.
“For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved” Romans 10:13.
“The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance” 2 Peter 3:9.
