“31 Then Jesus returned from the region of Tyre and went by way of Sidon toward the Sea of Galilee, in the region of the Decapolis. 32 They brought to him a deaf man who had an impediment in his speech, and they begged Jesus to lay His hand on him. 33 He took him aside in private, away from the crowd, and put His fingers into his ears, and He spat and touched His tongue. 34 Then looking up to heaven, Jesus sighed and said to him, ‘Ephphatha,’ that is, ‘Be opened.’ 35 And his ears were opened, his tongue was released, and he spoke plainly. 36 Then Jesus ordered them to tell no one, but the more He ordered them, the more zealously they proclaimed it. 37 They were astounded beyond measure, saying, ‘He has done everything well; He even makes the deaf to hear and the mute to speak’”
Mark 7:31-37.
We all have secrets. We will go to our grave keeping these secrets to ourselves. Jesus had secrets. In today’s story can you feel Jesus hoping for a bit more time before He had to draw things to a head. But these obstinate Galileans would not leave Jesus alone. Jesus knew, I think, that He had only a few more remarkable cures before He would receive so much notoriety that the authorities were bound to close in on Him and kill Him! His Kingdom work had legs of its own, momentum that Jesus could not stop. Time was rushing by. But what Jesus is doing is so significant. The blind are seeing, the deaf are hearing, and the mute are speaking!
In the next chapter we shall see that Jesus does bring things to a head in a conversation with His disciples, and this will bring about a new phase in His ministry.
Today, remember that Jesus knows all our secrets, so be in prayer that He will hear your sight so that you can see what He wants you tom see in your life. Pray that you will hear what Jesus wishes to tell you, and that you will do whatever Jesus tells you to do. And pray that every word that come out of your lips — from now on — will only lift up Christ to others.
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God, have mercy on me a sinner.
