2 Gathered at the Sea of Tiberias together were Simon Peter, Thomas called the Twin, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples. 3 Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We will go with you.” They went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. 4 Just after daybreak, Jesus stood on the beach, but the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. 5 Jesus said to them, “Children, have you any fish?” They answered him, “No” John 21:2-5.
This text occurs shortly after the death and resurrection of Jesus. Simon Peter and other disciples have given up on Jesus and decide to join Peter and return to fishing because Jesus is dead, and all the promises of Jesus have fallen flat on their head. He is dead and the promises of the long-awaited Savior have died with Him. So the first night out fishing they catch absolutely nothing. No fish; no income; no hope. And after a night of efforts trying to plug into their old way of living, Jesus appears on the beach, but the resurrected Jesus in unrecognizable. But it’s the question Jesus asks the disciples that has always intrigued me, so much so that I named this blog after these words of Jesus: Have You Any Fish?
Have You Any Fish? is Jesus’ way of asking us all: How is life going without Jesus in your life? How is life going with you having given up on Jesus? Have you Any Fish? Or are striking out without Me? The answer for us all is the same answer Peter and his pals answer Jesus: NO! We aren’t getting even one single fish. We cannot do a thing without Jesus!
So friends, consider your life with and without Jesus! PRAY!
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God, have mercy on me a sinner!
