I am beginning today some reflections on Mark’s Gospel, and I invite you to join me. My hope and prayer for you is that the gospel of Mark will lead you to Jesus Christ.
Mark begins with these words: “The beginning of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God” Mark 1:1. Every story has a beginning, and Mark begins with the Gospel, which in Greek is the word for “good news.” So this book is the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. The good news of Jesus means that Jesus is a genuine, historical person who walked on this earth like other men and women. That this is also the good news concerning Christ means that this is the good news of the Messiah, the long awaited, promised, and anointed savior of all men and women. That’s what the name Christ means. And then Mark says that this is the good news of the Son of God, the unique Son of God who is also God the Son.
So in the opening words of Mark’s Gospel is packed so much for us to reflect on Jesus Christ, the Son of God. A real historical person has come, and He is the long-awaited Messiah, the anointed Savior of the world who has come into the world. This is indeed, good news for all of humanity, and it is good news for you and me.
We just celebrated this fact at Christmas, so back up with me a bit and consider what we just celebrated. Forget the gift stuff. Forget the dinners and good wishes. Just look, in prayer, into the eyes and heart of Jesus Christ, Son of God, the Savior and Messiah of the world, and open your heart up to Him in silence and be in His presence for a spell today.
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God, have mercy on me a sinner.
From the Bible:
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life” John 3:16.
“And the angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God” Luke 1:35.
“And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God”
Matthew 14:33.
“But he remained silent and made no answer. Again the high priest asked him, ‘Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?’ And Jesus said, ‘I am, and you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven’” Mark 14:61-62.
