I am intrigued as I read and think about the Gospel of John that Jesus is distinctly the Son of God, or simply the Son. Jesus has a unique relationship with God as God’s Son. And perhaps more than any other gospel Jesus is subordinate to God, the Father. Jesus only does those things that the Father gives Him to say and do, but He also does everything that the Father does, since the Father shows Jesus, His Son, everything He Himself does. So in John’s Gospel it is fair to say that Jesus is perfectly obedient to the Father and His dependence on the Father shows in Jesus as The One who does nothing less than the words and deeds of God.
I can find in John’s Gospel many titles for who Jesus is, including the Son of Man, Rabbi, or Teacher, Messiah or The Christ, the Lamb of God, and of course numerous examples of I Am. We can also find Jesus referred to as the King of Israel or of the King of the Jews, and of course Jesus as God. But the summary title of Jesus is the Word or Logos. In the beginning was the Word. In the beginning God expressed Himself as the Word. That self-expression, God’s own Word, is identified as God, yet distinguishable from God because he has now become Flesh, the hope of all the Prophets. The introduction to John’s Gospel, the Prologue in the first 18 verses of the Gospel, serve as a summary of the entire Gospel and speak volumes about who Jesus is!
He is the Divine Word, God’s agent of creation, the source of light and life for all, a light surrounded by darkness, but eternally distinguished from the darkness. The Word is manifested in time, introduced by John the Baptist, who distinguishes himself from the Light, but bears witness to it! But the coming of the Word, the Light, is now here, and yet we all did not believe the Light. Verse 14 is the verse of all verses: “And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a Father’s only Son, full of grace and truth.” The earthly life of Jesus, though humble, displays the glory and mercy of God.
So in your prayer, consider who Jesus is in your life, and pray. Open your heart to Him in your prayer.
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God, have mercy on me a sinner.
