...lamb of God...

It has always intrigued me that in John’s Gospel the first recorded person to meet Jesus is John the baptist, who says these words about Jesus: “The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and declared, ‘Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world’” John 1:29! John never met Jesus until this moment, yet John knew Jesus, and so when He finally meets Him, this is how he identifies Jesus, as the Lamb of God. Jesus is the One who will be sacrificed to God in place of the Passover Lamb who is sacrificed to keep the angel of death from killing the first-born. That original Passover Lamb was used by God to free Israel from slavery to Pharaoh, King of Egypt. And now John the Baptizer is identifying Jesus as the Lamb of God who will be sacrificed on the Cross to save all humanity from eternal sin and death!

This is so revealing to us all about who Jesus is. He is the sacrificial Lamb God, the Savior and Messiah, the Christ! Jesus did not come for Himself. He for you and for me! He was totally about saving you and me. His life here on earth was not about Himself, but about you and me. His entire focus in life was others!

Take this fact to prayer, today, and give God thanks. Pray for His grace to help you do the same. Or better still, pray for His grace to help you be the same.

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God, have mercy on me a sinner.

From the Bible:

“He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he opened not his mouth’ Isaiah 53:7.

“But with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot”

1 Peter 1:19.

“And Isaac said to his father Abraham, ‘My father!’ And he said, ‘Here I am, my son.’ He said, ‘Behold, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering’” Genesis 22:7?

“1

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

2

He makes me lie down in green pastures; he leads me beside still waters;

3

he restores my soul. He leads me in right paths for his name’s sake.

4

Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

5

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

6

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord my whole life long” Psalm 23.
