The very holy people I have known in my life do not live in some other world. They live in the same world we do, and they show us that the spiritual life is intensely down-to-earth. We learn to love through frustration, disappointment, and failure. We learn through the seemingly trivial incidents, as well as the gigantic moments, of our daily lives.
We need to seek only what pleases Jesus. And that is not about trying to make a great personal sacrifice, nor is about trying to be perfectly righteous, nor about being a perfect friend. Searching for what pleases Jesus is not about being perfectly responsive, perfectly available, or perfectly forgiving. But we must never forget that, by ourselves, we can do, we can heal, we can correct nothing. The point is not to be perfect, but to “perfectly” leave Christ to do the healing and to correct in us what He wills.
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God, have mercy on me a sinner.
From the Bible:
“I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing” John 15:5.
“I can do all things through him who strengthens me” Philippians 4:13.
“You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you” John 15:16.
“By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples” John 15:8.
