I have always been attracted to and challenged by these words of Jesus:
“34 Your eye is the lamp of your body. If your eye is healthy, your whole body is full of light, but if it is unhealthy, your body is full of darkness” Luke 11:34.
What has struck me about this remark and challenge of Jesus is this:
How you and I look at life, how we look at others and ourselves, how we look at God can enable each of us to live life in the Light of Christ or in the darkness. Our point of view, our thoughts and words, our opinions and philosophies of life all influence whether the Light of Christ or darkness fills our hearts. Who my friends are and the things I read enable us to respond to the invitation of Christ to “Follow Me” or to walk away from Him.
Obviously this comment and command of Jesus is, in my humble opinion, largely, metaphorical, although it is also literally true. What we each allow our hearts to “look” at, what we are attracted to in our lives, these all reflect the inner strength and health of our hearts and souls.
I invite you to read the Scriptures each day to help you to “look” at Christ and the world in which you live, and to “look” at yourself in the way Christ does. Reading and thinking deeply about the Word of God, and praying daily are the primary ways I know of to allow your heart — or your “eye” — to be the lamp of your light.
Take this beautiful and challenging text to prayer today.
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God, have mercy on me a sinner.
From the Bible:
“Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” John 8:12.
“I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness” John 12:46.
“The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid” Psalm 27:1?
“While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light”
John 12:36.
