When Mary, the mother of Jesus, told the servers at the wedding in Cana, “Do whatever Jesus tells you to do” (John 2:5), she spoke words that describe the meaning and purpose of life. She spoke words that describe the path to holiness. She spoke words that answer the question, “Why pray?” Mary’s words describe a lifetime of practice, a lifetime of living, for living the Christian life — or holiness — does not occur all at once.
We learn by advice and by the example of others. We learn by others whom God brings into our lives to teach us, to guide us, in the path to holiness. Most of all, we learn everything good from God! There is a reason we have two knees, for if we had only one knee and we kept falling down, as we do, we couldn’t walk. So holiness comes through a lifetime of falling down and God picking us up again.
Clearly Mary spoke of the only business of life that is ours:
To please God, and to do everything God tells us to do.
So today I invite you to pray this throughout your day:
Oh Lord, help me today to do everything You ask me to do!
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God, have mercy on me a sinner.
From the Bible:
“So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God”
1 Corinthians 10:31.
“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for others, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ” Colossians 3:23-24.
“Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven” Matthew 5:16.
“For you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body” 1 Corinthians 6:20.
“Thus says the Lord: ‘Let not the wise person boast in their wisdom, let not the mighty person boast in their might, let not the rich person boast in their riches, but let whoever boasts boast in this, that you understand and know Me, that I am the Lord who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. For in these things I delight, declares the Lord” Jeremiah 9:23-24.
“Mary said, ‘My soul magnifies the Lord’” Luke 1:46.
