My suspicion is that few people think of God in terms of His infinite goodness and perfection. Here are a few texts from the Bible that speak to me of the goodness and perfection of God. Take a look at these and add your own to this list:
“You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect” Matthew 5:48.
This can be a tough text because it suggests that we must be perfect
just as God is perfect, which is difficult to understand, of course.
But the text below helps me understand it’s meaning and possibility.
“God’s way is perfect; the Word of the Lord proves true;
He is a shield for all those who take refuge in him” Psalm 18:30.
We are called by God “to take refuge in Him” for that is the path to perfection, the path to understanding God’s perfection
and the path for us to strive for perfection.
The more we take refuge in Him, the more we feel and see and understand
how great is His loving shield of us in life.
“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God,
what is good and acceptable and perfect” Romans 12:2.
When we make God our refuge and our strength,
when we desire daily to do everything the Lord commands of us,
when we desire union with Him, we are changed,
we are renewed in our thoughts, and we
come to know God infinite goodness and perfection
as He reveals His will for us.
“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever” Psalm 23:6.
The goodness of God is not a theological construction
but a truth of who He is that follows us each day of our life.
Notice, too, the connection between the goodness of God
and the mercy on God. Both belong together!
“For God so loved the world, that He gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him” John 3:16-17.
In many ways this is the quintessential text regarding the
perfection and goodness of God, for God’s love is unspeakably good
and unimaginably perfect. In the goodness and perfection of God
lies the promise of eternal life for all believe in Him!
God’s saving presence in Jesus Christ
is the most powerful and assuring goodness and perfection of God!
“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect” Romans 12:2.
We are called, as believers, to be changed,
to be born again and again and again,
to be transformed in our thoughts and desires
so that we can feel and see and understand the will of God.
Everything about God is good, acceptable, and perfect.
May we desire union with Him, intimate union!
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God, have mercy on me a sinner!
