I don’t think many people realize the presence and power of the Holy Spirit that lives in each of us. In fact Jesus spoke often of this great gift of the Counselor, as He often called the Holy Spirit, that was given to us after Jesus returned to heaven following His death, resurrection, and ascension into heaven. For example, consider this remark by Jesus before his death and resurrection:
“4 I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you. 5 But now I am going to him who sent me, yet none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ 6 But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your hearts. 7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Advocate (Holy Spirit) will not come to you, but if I go, I will send him to you. 8 And when he comes, he will prove the world wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 about sin, because they do not believe in me; 10 about righteousness, because I am going to the Father, and you will see me no longer; 11 about judgment, because the ruler of this world has been condemned” John 16:4-11.
Here we see not only the gift of the Holy Spirit but also the work of the holy Spirit. The Spirit of God comes to us to show us the love and mercy of God, especially when we sin. It is the Spirit who helps us (grace) turn away from temptation and sin when we place our faith — our trust — in the Holy Spirit. The Spirit. And the presence of the Spirit assures us that we are never alone, that God — in His Spirit — is always with us. So we know that because of the presence of the Spirit we are in the right relationship (righteousness) with God. Our faith is well-place in the Spirit and because of the Spirit. And lastly the presence of the Spirit in our life empowers us to step away from Satan and his life of sin and death because the Spirit does not abide in him act all.
So the Spirit who lives in us gives us life and empowers us to live in humble obedience of God. Never underestimate the presence of God and His power in us through the Holy Spirit.
Today, in your prayer, ask the Holy Spirit to fill us with his presence so that we may live in humble obedience of God.
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God, have mercy on me a sinner.
From the Bible:
“Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words”
Romans 8:26.
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law” Galatians 5:22-23.
“And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit’”
Acts 2:38.
