...what pleases the Lord...

Fourth Sunday of Lent

“8 for once you were darkness, but now in the Lord you are light. Walk as children of light, 9 for the fruit of the light is found in all that is good and right and true. 10 Try to find out what is pleasing to the Lord. 11 Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness; rather, expose them. 12 For it is shameful even to mention what such people do secretly, 13 but everything exposed by the light becomes visible, 14 for everything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says, ‘Sleeper, awake! Rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you’” Ephesians 5:8-14.

I marvel when people tell me sometimes how irrelevant the bible. My usual response if that you’ve never read it or thought deeply about it. But I also realize that God’s Word has to show up in our daily decisions and behavior. I am very capable of talking a good talk. But walking the walk is the key.

I know what it is to be in darkness, and what it is to be in Light, thanks be to God! I know what it to walk in darkness and in the Light. When my life is occurring in what is good and right and true, I thank God for walking in the Light. I love the advice of Paul in verse 10: “Try to find out what is pleasing to the Lord.” Now, of course, it follows that what is pleasing to the Lord will show up in our behavior, our words, and our daily choices. What is pleasing to the Lord will show up in our daily pryer time, our time of silence in His presence, and our devotion to His Word every day. That’s what I’m saying.

So as we continue to move through Lent, take a look at yourself.

Try to find out what is pleasing to the Lord — and do it!

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God, have mercy on me a sinner.

From the Bible:

“Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls” Matthew 11:29.

“In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven” Matthew 5:16.

“Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure” Philippians 2:12-13.
