The Parable of the Sower
“1 Again Jesus began to teach beside the sea. Such a very large crowd gathered around him that he got into a boat on the sea and sat there, while the whole crowd was beside the sea on the land. 2 He began to teach them many things in parables, and in his teaching he said to them: 3 ‘Listen! A sower went out to sow. 4 And as he sowed, some seed fell on a path, and the birds came and ate it up. 5 Other seed fell on rocky ground, where it did not have much soil, and it sprang up quickly, since it had no depth of soil. 6 And when the sun rose, it was scorched, and since it had no root it withered away. 7 Other seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it, and it yielded no grain. 8 Other seed fell into good soil and brought forth grain, growing up and increasing and yielding thirty and sixty and a hundredfold.’ 9 And he said, ‘If you have ears to hear, then hear!’
The Purpose of the Parables
10 When Jesus was alone, those who were around him along with the twelve asked him about the parables. 11 And he said to them, “To you has been given the secret of the kingdom of God, but for those outside everything comes in parables, 12 in order that
‘they may indeed look but not perceive, and may indeed hear but not understand;so that they may not turn again and be forgiven.’ ”
13 And he said to them, “Do you not understand this parable? Then how will you understand all the parables? 14 The sower sows the word. 15 These are the ones on the path where the word is sown: when they hear, Satan immediately comes and takes away the word that is sown in them. 16 And these are the ones sown on rocky ground: when they hear the word, they immediately receive it with joy. 17 But they have no root and endure only for a while; then, when trouble or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately they fall away. 18 And others are those sown among the thorns: these are the ones who hear the word, 19 but the cares of the age and the lure of wealth and the desire for other things come in and choke the word, and it yields nothing. 20 And these are the ones sown on the good soil: they hear the word and accept it and bear fruit, thirty and sixty and a hundredfold” Mark 4:1-20.
Place yourself among the seeds that are sown by hand and land in different areas on the ground. Which seed are you? Make Jesus’ explanation personal for you! Do you barely hear the Word of God but are overpowered by Satan with your thoughts, your anger, your own plans for your life, so much so that God’s Word has no affect on you? Or are you a seed that lands on rocky soil? You love to think about the Word and talk about ideas you have about the Word, but you don’t allow God’s Spirit to take root in your life. God is all in your head, but not in your heart, especially when something bad or difficult occurs in your life. Or are you a seed that is sown among the thorns and weeds? You allow your own plans and desires for things that our world tells you are so important. But the Word of God is choked from changing your heart!
Think about this — for yourself!
You see, what God wants for all of us is that we become seeds that land on good soil. When you hear the Word of God it changes you. You are touched, and you take time to go deeply into that Word, so much so that God’s Word lives in your heart, not just in your head. You are seed that is changed.
Take time in your prayer today and think deeply about — meditate on this Word — and allow God to speak to you.
Lord Jesus Christ, son of the Living God, have mercy on me a sinner.
From the Bible:
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, you are a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come” 2 Corinthians 5:17.
“And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules”
Ezekiel 36:26-27.
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” 1 John 1:9.
“I am sure of this, that God who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ” Philippians 1:6.
